MU Opens Spring Season with a Three-Game Weekend

MILWAUKEE—The Marquette University women’s soccer team starts its spring season with an away match against Valparaiso on Friday, March 31 and will welcome Iowa State and UW-Milwaukee to Valley Fields on Sunday, April 2.
The Golden Eagles finished their 2016 campaign as the regular season BIG EAST champions with a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over DePaul. The season ended with a 1-0 loss to Wisconsin in the NCAA Tournament, and a final 12-8-2 (7-2 BIG EAST) record.
Marquette will be working with a new roster as they graduate 10 seniors from the 2016 squad. MU will fill the shoes of ALL-BIG EAST honorees Liz Bartels and Morgan Proffitt. Proffit was selected 12th in the NWSL Draft by the Chicago Red Stars and has started competing as a rookie this season.
Valparaiso finished their 2016 season with a 9-10 (5-4 Horizon League) record. The Crusaders were led by senior April Cronin, who finished the season with 21 points.
Iowa State sophomore Klasey Medelberg led the Cyclones with 10 points, helping the team finish the 2016 season with a 10-8-1 (3-5-1 Big 12) record.
UW-Milwaukee finished the 2016 season with a 13-5-2 (8-1 Horizon League) record, ending the season as Horizon League regular season champions. Junior midfielder Anna Smalley led the Panthers with 11 goals and 26 points. Marquette’s matchup with the Panthers last season ended in a 1-1 tie in double overtime.
