MU Travels to Illinois, Northwestern Saturday
March 30, 2012
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's soccer team continues its spring exhibition season on Saturday, March 31 when it travels to play at Illinois and Northwestern. The Golden Eagles will take on the Illini at Noon at the Illinois Soccer and Track Stadium before meeting the Wildcats at Lakeside Field at 6 p.m.
"The challenge is slightly different from last weekend since we have a little more rest between games," said head coach Markus Roeders. "The competition should be excellent and we are expecting two very good teams. Traditionally, Illinois always is one of the top two or three teams in the Big Ten, and they won the tournament this past fall. Northwestern is going through their change with new coaches and everything that goes with it. For us, it is all about building on last weekend and improving individually and as a team. These should be a fun trip and our expectation is to be successful."
The Golden Eagles are back in action after a 1-1 weekend in its first two outdoor games of the spring. MU topped Loyola 5-2 behind goals from Mary Luba, Rachel Brown, Maegan Kelly and Shalese Miller. After a 20-minute break the Golden Eagles were back at it, but dropped a 4-2 decision to reigning Missouri Valley Conference Champion, Illinois State. Both Brown and Kelly tallied for Marquette in the loss.
Sofie Schunk saw her first significant minutes between the pipes against Loyola and Illinois State. Schunk played all 170 minutes and posted six saves on the day.
Illinois will play its first game outdoors Saturday against Marquette. The Big Ten Tournament champions finished the 2011 season 17-5-2 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship.
Marquette will also be the first opponent on Northwestern's spring slate. The Wildcats posted a 2-16-1 mark last fall and have since hired a new head coach, former UW-Milwaukee headman Michael Moynihan.
Marquette and Northwestern met during the 2011 season with the Golden Eagles earning a 1-0 win in overtime.
