Marquette Earns Two Victories in Its Spring Schedule
April 8, 2013
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's soccer team added a pair of victories to its spring exhibition slate on Sunday, April 7 by beating Loyola Chicago, 1-0, before downing Cardinal Stritch, 11-0.
Marquette hosted the Ramblers at Valley Fields to open the day. Despite scoring just one goal, the Golden Eagles dominated posession over the Ramblers and controlled the pace of the game. The lone goal of the match came in the 63rd minute when Maegan Kelly sent a cross into the box and found teammate Kate Reigle, who headed the ball into the back of the net.
"Loyola is a disciplined team and defensively sound," head coach Markus Roederssaid. "We did a good job of creating chances, but their goalies came up with some spectacular saves. If we would have been a little smarter and more clinical in the final third of the field, we probably could have scored a few more goals."
Sofie Schunkplayed all 90 minutes in net and notched five saves to record the shutout.
Following the game against the Ramblers, Marquette traveled to Uihlein Soccer Park to battle Cardinal Stritch.
"These games are a terrific learning tool for our team," Roeders said. "There are just certain experiences that you gain playing games that can't be simulated in practice."
Marquette will head to Iowa City, Iowa on Saturday, April 13 to continue its spring slate with a double-header against Iowa at 1 p.m. and Western Illinois at 3 p.m.
