Marquette Drops Spring Game at Wisconsin
April 21, 2014
MILWAUKEE--The Marquette women's soccer team continued its spring slate last week and fell just short at Wisconsin in a 3-1, 90-minute battle. The Golden Eagles will be right back in action on Wednesday, April 23 playing against the Mexican National Team in South Bend, Ind. At 7 p.m. CT.
MU got on the board first with a 1-0 lead after a beautiful strike from Mary Luba 35 yards out that sailed into the far post. The squads played three 30-minute stretches and were tied 1-1 after the first period ended. Wisconsin scored two goals in the second 30-minutes and MU played a 0-0 draw in the final 30-minute period. The Golden Eagles outshot the Badgers by a 13-9 margin throughout the whole match.
"These are always competitive matches and losing is always tough," head coach Markus Roeders said. "We didn't do enough over the 90-minutes to warrant a win today. Unlike most matches this spring, we made a few too many mistakes and Wisconsin definitely took advantage. On the other side, we had three or four good opportunities, but the ball wouldn't bounce in the net. Mary Luba played a terrific match and her goal was fantastic. We are excited to see her as a senior this fall. Overall the spring has been very positive and finishing the season against the Mexican National Team is definitely a highlight."
Wednesday will be the final game this spring for the Golden Eagles, who own a 4-1-2 record against spring opponents.
