Golden Eagles Notch 1-0 Victory Over U-20 Mexican National Team
April 24, 2014
MILWAUKEE--The Marquette University women's soccer team concluded its 2014 spring campaign with 1-0 victory over the U-20 Mexican National Team Wednesday, April 24, in South Bend, Ind. The Golden Eagles finish their spring slate of action with a 5-1-2 record.
After both squads battled back-and-forth without finding the net for the majority of the contest, MU's Ashley Handwork was able to break the 0-0 tie in the 84th minute when she scored off of a cross from teammate Lisa Roman. The scoring chance was set up when junior Mary Luba advanced the ball up to the freshman Roman who subsequently served the ball up to the streaking Handwork who was then able to convert a sliding goal to propel MU to victory. Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Engelwas between the pipes for the entirety of the match, and earned the shutout in South Bend.
"It was an entertaining match and a great way to finish the spring. We played some very good possession soccer in the first half but weren't as fluid in the second. Defensively, we were organized and really limited their chances to a couple of opportunities. It seemed as if the game would finish a draw, but our team showed resolve and getting the goal and the win at the end was a nice ending to the spring," said head coach Markus Roeders.
Along with the 5-1-2 record, the Golden Eagles were able to shutout their opponent six times this spring, displaying a stingy defensive unit.
