Women's Soccer Raises Funds to Help Kick Cancer
May 5, 2009
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's soccer team continues to go above and beyond in support of off-the-field initiatives. Recently at the Kicks Against Breast Cancer Collegiate Invitational (KABC) held at Solider Field in Chicago, Ill., the Golden Eagles raised an event-high $5,200 in support of breast cancer awareness, research and treatment. "It was an outstanding weekend for our team," said head coach Markus Roeders. "Our players, their families, friends, our alumni and others associated with our program when above and beyond contributing to KABC. We appreciate everybody's support and we know it will make a difference. Playing at Soldier Field was a unique and fun experience; our play on the day reflected our team's excitement for the tournament.' For their efforts, the Golden Eagles were presented the American Flag that flew at Solider Field during the event. "We are very honored to receive a commemorative flag that flew over Soldier Field on the day of our games. It will have a permanent place in our showcase display at the Marquette Gym," remarked Roeders. The money raised benefited the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center, a service of Howard County General Hospital. It is a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine and Children's Memorial Hospital Research Center of Chicago. This is not the first time, the Golden Eagles have supported the fight against breast cancer. Marquette donned pink jerseys during the 2007 season for its home game against Providence and hosted a Soccer Mom Camp with the Marquette men's soccer team in spring of 2007 and 2008. Marquette capped the spring season 3-1-3 including a win over DePaul, 2-0, and a 0-0 draw with Wisconsin at Solider Field.
