MU Quartet Helps Red Stars Reserves to First WPSL Title

EDMOND, Oklahoma - Current Marquette University women's soccer players Jacie Jermier, Morgan Proffitt and Ashley Handwork and the Chicago Red Stars Reserves captured the 2015 Women's Premier Soccer League National Championship with a 2-1 victory over SoCal FC on Sunday afternoon in Edmond, Oklahoma.

Handwork headed in the eventual game winner in the 52nd minute on a corner kick from former MU teammate Mary Luba, who also scored the first goal of the day in the 18th minute.

The Red Stars Reserves defeated tournament-host Oklahoma City FC, 3-2, on Saturday in the semifinals to advance to the title game. Handwork and Luba each tallied goals against Oklahoma City.

The championship is the first WSPL crown for Chicago, which had advanced to the title game previously in 2011 and 2012.

Incoming freshman Jamie Kutey and KC Metro Dynamos U18 fell to the DMCV Sharks Elite, 5-1, in the semifinals of the 2015 US Youth Soccer National Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Saturday. Kutey was recently named a TopDrawerSoccer.com Spring Second Team All-American.
