Legault-Cordisco Set For FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup
Aug. 6, 2012
Marquette women’s soccer player Vanessa Legault-Cordisco will represent her native country of Canada in international competition later this month when she participates in the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan.
The 16-team tournament begins August 19 and runs through September 8. Canada will face Argentina (August 20), Norway (August 23) and Korea DPR (August 27) in group play. Legault-Cordisco and her teammates depart for Japan on Wednesday morning. The squad will face host Japan in an exhibition match in the days leading up to the official tournament opener.
“It’s a privilege to represent my country at any level of competition, especially in a World Cup,” Legault-Cordisco said. “I take a great deal of pride in the opportunity. We don’t know much about our opponents, but are looking forward to giving 100 percent and hopefully coming away with the gold medal.”
Earlier this year, Canada qualified for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup with a silver-medal performance at the 2012 CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championship. Legault-Cordisco started three matches at that event and scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Mexico to win Group A and advance to the semifinals.
This year marks Canada's fifth participation in the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, with its best performance a silver-medal finish in 2002. In two years, Canada will host the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.
Along with being a member of the U20 Canadian National Team, the Laval, Quebec, Canada, native trained with the senior national team in Costa Rica last spring and also played with Canadian National Team that won the 2011 Pan American Games in October.
