Senior Ally Miller of the Marquette women's soccer team has been named the Preseason BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and the Golden Eagles were picked to finish first in the American Division, the league office announced Tuesday morning.

Miller and junior Maegan Kelly were also both tabbed Preseason All-BIG EAST in a survey of the league's head coaches. Miller was a third team honoree following the conclusion of the 2011 campaign, while Kelly earned a spot on the first team.

"Our team appreciates the respect shown to us by coaches across the league," head coach Markus Roeders said. "It puts a greater target on our backs and we will continue to learn how to live with it. A new year brings new opportunities and we surely won't take any BIG EAST opponents lightly.

"We are excited for Maegan and Ally since they have shown over the years to be among the top players in the league and in the country," Roeders added. "They appreciate individual recognition, but also know that our team's success is priority number one."

Marquette, which has won at least a share of the division title in each of the past three seasons, collected a total of 97 points (13 first-place votes) to earn the top spot in the American Division. Connecticut totaled 84 points to finish in second place, while USF was third with 57 points. Notre Dame (109 points) was selected to claim the National Division.

The Golden Eagles will host the program's annual Fan Fest on Thursday afternoon beginning at 4:30 p.m. The evening's festivities conclude with a scrimmage against Wisconsin. The 2012 regular season begins on Friday, Aug. 17 when the squad hosts St. Bonaventure at 7 p.m. CT at Valley Fields.

MU concluded the 2011 season 18-4-0 overall and 10-1-0 in BIG EAST Conference play and advanced to the NCAA Championship Second Round.
