Marquette Selected First in Preseason Coaches' Poll
Aug. 7, 2013
The Marquette women's soccer team has been tabbed as the preseason favorite to win the BIG EAST regular season crown as voted by the league's head coaches. The Golden Eagles have won four-consecutive regular season division titles.
MU returns six starters from last years' squad that won the 2012 BIG EAST Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. The Golden Eagles complied an 18-2-3 record overall and a 9-0-1 mark in conference play. Marquette earned seven of 10 first place votes and tallied 79 total points in the vote.
Seniors Emily Jacobson, Maegan Kelly and Taylor Madigan were all named to the preseason All-BIG EAST team. Both Jacobson and Kelly were unanimous picks to the squad. All three were all-conference selections last season.
After Marquette, Georgetown was second with 75 total points, including three first place votes, followed by Villanova (63) and DePaul (51). The Hoyas swept the preseason individual awards as Daphne Corboz was tabbed Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Emily Menges was named Defensive Player of the Year and Emma Newins was selected as Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.
The Golden Eagles will host their annual Fan Fest at Valley Fields on Friday, August 16. MU will open the season at Portland a week later on Aug. 23 and will play the first BIG EAST Conference match of the season on the road at Creighton on Sept. 26.
