WSOC opens exhibition play Thursday at Wisconsin
Aug. 8, 2017
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's soccer team will travel to Madison on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. Central time exhibition match against the University of Wisconsin, marking the 11th-straight year the teams have gone head-to-head in their preseason openers.
Last season, Marquette posted a 12-8-2 mark with a 7-2 BIG EAST conference record to notch its sixth BIG EAST regular season title and 10th league crown overall. MU's NCAA Championship appearance was also its 13th in program history.
The team looks to adjust after losing 10 seniors, including All-BIG EAST performers Morgan Proffitt and Liz Bartels. Six freshmen will be added a roster that includes returning All-BIG EAST Championship Team selections in forward Carrie Madden and goalkeeper Maddy Henry, along with senior defender Madison Dunker and sixth-year forward Darian Powell.
The Golden Eagles are 5-7-2 all-time versus the Badgers in the regular season and NCAA tournament, which includes a 1-0 loss at UW in the opening round of last year's NCAA tournament. MU also fell to Wisconsin, 2-0, at home in 2016 exhibition action.
The Badgers are coming off a 9-5-8 season, ending in a double-overtime loss to Florida in the second round of NCAA tournament play.
Marquette's regular season opener is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Central time against No. 2 Stanford.
