MU Soccer Teams Celebrate Fan Fest at Valley Fields
Aug. 14, 2014
MILWAUKEE - Family and friends helped the Marquette University men's and women's soccer teams kick off their respective 2014 seasons at the their annual Fan Fest celebration on a beautiful Thursday evening at Valley Fields.
The sun was shining as hundreds from the Milwaukee community came out to support the Golden Eagles. Players and coaches from both teams took pictures, signed autographs, hosted interactive soccer stations and mingled with dedicated Marquette Soccer fans, young and old. Everyone in attendance was treated to free Qdoba and a variety of fun activities.
Later in the evening, fans packed the stands to watch both squads play. The women's soccer team took the pitch first, playing a full exhibition match against Wisconsin, while halftime featured an intrasquad men's Blue vs. Gold scrimmage.
The women's team, which was taking a break from its annual trip to Camp Whitcomb, dropped a 1-0 exhibition decision to rival Wisconsin to cap the evening's festivities. UW's Cara Walls split two defenders at the top of the box and eventually touched the ball into an empty net at the 7:55 mark for the only score of the match. MU, picked first in the BIG EAST preseason poll, generated a number of quality chances in the second half, but was unable to find the back of the net.
The men will be back in action at 1 p.m. Central time on Sunday, Aug. 17, when they host Tulsa at Valley fields in their first true exhibition match of the fall. The women will host Loyola-Chicago in their 2014 season opener at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 22.
