Marquette Opens 2011 Season against Western Michigan

MILWAUKEE- The No. 12/14 Marquette University women's soccer team officially opens the 2011 season Friday, Aug. 19 at Valley Fields against Western Michigan at 7:30 p.m. The Golden Eagles continue their season . opening four-game home stand Sunday, Aug. 21 when it hosts Northwestern at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Fields

"We are eager to play some games that count," said head coach Markus Roeders. "The team has worked extremely hard and had fun doing it. Being at home early in the season is something that we embrace and there is no place like home to open the season. Western Michigan is coming of a successful year and will be fired up to battle us. Northwestern is always tough and their talented freshmen class will be a force with their returning group. These are games that will help us get ready for BIG EAST play later this season."

The Golden Eagles welcome back 21 letter winners and seven starters from a team that repeated as BIG EAST American Division champions with an impressive 11-0-0 record (16-5-3 overall) and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championship. Eleven newcomers, including transfer Vanessa Legault-Cordisco, join the squad in 2011.

Four All-BIG EAST selections from 2010 return to the lineup this season including the league's BIG EAST Goalkeeper and Defensive Players of the Year, Natalie Kulla and Kerry McBride. The team's top two leading scorers, Rachael Sloan, a two-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection, and Maegan Kelly, an All-BIG EAST Rookie honoree, also return for the 2011 season.

The Golden Eagles are 9-7-2 all-time in season openers and 9-5-1 under Roeders, who returns to the helm for his 16th season. The Golden Eagles have won five of their last six season openers with wins over No. 13 Illinois (1-0) in 2005, Bowling Green (3-0) in 2006, Washington (2-0) in 2007, Loyola (1-0) in 2008 and Idaho State (5-0) in 2010. MU fell at Pepperdine, 2-1, in overtime in 2009.

The Broncos return seven starters from a team that finished 11-7-5 in 2010 and made an appearance in the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship game. WMU's top five scorers from 2010 are also back, including MAC Offensive Player of the Year Stephanie Skowneski.

Marquette is 1-0 all-time against WMU with the Golden Eagles blanking the Broncos, 2-0, in the two teams' lone meeting during the 2009 in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Northwestern is picked to finish 10th in the Big Ten after a 6-10-3 overall record in 2010. The Wildcats return eight starters, including top scorer Kate Allen who registered six goals and one assist in 2010. Ten newcomers join NU this season. Marquette and Northwestern will meet for the eighth time in a series that commenced during the 1994 season. Marquette owns a 4-1-2 all-time mark over NU and has won the last three matches. In their most recent match, the Golden Eagles topped the Wildcats, 2-1, at Englemann Field in the 2005 MKE Cup.

Friday is Wisconsin Youth Soccer Night. A 2-for-1 admission will be offered for all youth soccer players wearing their team jersey. The Golden Eagles will also be on hand for a post-game photo opportunity.
