No. 13/9 Marquette Hosts Crosstown Foe Milwaukee on Friday

Milwaukee, Wis. - The No. 13/9 Marquette University women's soccer team (1-0-0) welcomes Milwaukee (1-0-1) to Valley Fields for an 8:30 p.m. CT matchup on Friday, Aug. 24. The game will be the second contest in a doubleheader with the men's soccer team, also playing UWM at 6:30 p.m. CT.
This is the 21st meeting between the squads in a series that dates back to 1993. Marquette has a 7-7-6 record against the Panthers and earned an exciting 1-0 double overtime victory at UWM last season. The Golden Eagles have not lost against their crosstown foe since Sept. 3, 1998.
Friday will be an attendance record challenge at Valley Fields and all fans areencouraged to wear navy as part of the Navy Nightmare presented by the MU Spirit Shop. The most spirited/best dressed Marquette student will win a $150 gift card to the MU Spirit Shop. Second and third place students will receive $25 MU Spirit Shop gift cards. Winners will be announced between men's and women's games.
Miller Named Defensive Player of the Week: Senior Ally Miller has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts in the Golden Eagles' 4-0 victory over St. Bonaventure in the season opener. The senior played 79 minutes and anchored a defensive squad that allowed just two shots with one on goal. Miller also earned an assist. The senior was also named GoMarquette.com's Student-Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week.
Efficiency, Balance Leads to First Win: Marquette found the back of the net on each of its first three shots of goal and cruised to a 4-0 victory over St. Bonaventure Friday night in the season opener. Senior Rachel Sloan, who hadn't played since Sept. 11 of 2011 because of a knee injury, opened the scoring at the 6:30 mark on a header from 10 yards out. Junior Taylor Madigan and senior Rachel Brown followed with scores and MU owned a 3-0 advantage at the intermission. Sophomore Mary Luba capped the scoring with a goal at the 88:09 mark. The Golden Eagles collected 20 shots total, with 12 different players tallying at least one attempt.
Miller, Kelly Earn Preseason Accolades: Senior Ally Miller has been named the Preseason BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and was also named preseason all-league in a survey of the conference's head coaches. Kelly joined Miller on the squad and was also tabbed to the 2012 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. Miller was named All-BIG EAST Third Team in 2011 while Kelly garnered first team accolades.
Miller Being Noticed: Senior Ally Miller has been named to the Soccer America Preseason All-American squad. She is one of five defenders earning the preseason honors. The Mequon, Wis., native has started 63 of the 66 career matches in which she has played and has helped lead Marquette to three-straight division championships and NCAA appearances. She owns three career goals and has helped anchor one of the top defensive units in the nation during her tenure.
Potential Starting Lineup Features Experience: Marquette's probable starting lineup features just one player (Schunk) who isn't at least competing in her respective junior campaign. Eight of the players own at least 30 career starting assignments and that group has combined for 69 total goals.
Marquette is now 11-7-2 all-time in season openers, including an 11-5-1 mark under head coach Markus Roeders.
Up Next: The Golden Eagles will travel to St. Louis on Sunday, Aug. 26 for a 5:30 p.m. start in the first of two road contests. MU will play at Northwestern on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7:00 p.m.
