No. 12/13 Marquette to Play in 12th Annual MKE Cup

MILWAUKEE - The No. 12/13 Marquette University women's soccer team will host Saint Louis and No. RV/23 Long Beach State for the 12th annual MKE Cup this weekend at Valley Fields. The Golden Eagles will play the Billikens Friday at 7:30 p.m. and face the 49ers on Sunday at 11 a.m. A live audio stream will be available for both games courtesy of WMUR.

Milwaukee will kick-off the tournament against LBST on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saint Louis on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both of those matches will be played at Englemann Field.

The Golden Eagles have won three of 11 MKE Cups. Marquette stands 17-5 all-time in MKE Cup action with a 12-4 record in games played at Valley Fields. Last season, MU shutout Auburn (3-0), before falling to New Mexico in the title game in overtime (1-0).

The Golden Eagles enter MKE Cup play riding an 11-game home unbeaten streak at Valley Fields. Marquette opened the 2011 season with a pair of shut-out wins in its first weekend of play over Western Michigan and Northwestern. Sophomore Maegan Kelly and senior Lindsey Page each found the back of the net for the Golden Eagles.

The Billikens welcome back 15 letterwinners, including their top two scorers, Alli Reimer and Jenny Hummert, from the 2010 squad went 4-9-6 overall. Both Reimer and Hummert tallied goals in Saint Louis' 4-0 season-opening win over Evansville.

It will be the 12th meeting between the Billikens and the Golden Eagles in a series that began in 1996 as members of Conference USA. Marquette leads the all-time series, 5-2-4.The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in their last meeting on Sept. 6, 2006.

Long Beach State, who was picked to finish second in the Big West Conference, returns 16 letterwinners from a 2010 squad that went 14-6-2, won the program's first Big West Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

The 49ers opened their season with a pair of wins over No. 23 USC (2-1) and Sacramento State (3-0). Shawna Gordon, the team's leading scorer from 2010, registered two goals in the opening weekend of play.Following the wins, LBST found itself ranked No. 23 in the Soccer America Top 25 and receiving votes (19) in the NSCAA Top 25.

Sunday's match will mark the first meeting between the Golden Eagles and the 49ers.

Friday is Camper Reunion Night. All Marquette soccer summer campers will receive free admission to the game. Also, all Marquette students in attendance are invited to attend a halftime tailgate with a free taco bar provided by Qdoba.
