MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The No. 13/9 women's soccer team (2-0-0) returns to action on Sunday at Saint Louis (1-1-1). Kickoff against the Billikens begins at 5:30 p.m. CT. at Hermann Stadium.

The Golden Eagles registered their second consecutive shutout victory on Friday evening with a 4-0 defeat of crosstown foe Milwaukee on Friday evening. Sophomore goalkeeper Sofie Schunk earned her second shutout from behind the net.

Saint Louis earned its first victory of the season on Friday evening with a late scoring drive to defeat Evansville 2-0. Saint Louis is 1-1-1 on the season.

Everyone Contributes in Victory: Four different Golden Eagles scored on Friday night's victory over Milwaukee. Seniors Ally Miller and Rachael Sloan along with juniors Cara Jacobson and Kate Reigle found the back of the net for one goal apiece. Junior Maegan Kelly added two assists with junior Emily Jacobson handing out one.

Shot Opportunities: For the second consecutive match, Marquette outshot its opponent to register a shutout victory. Against Milwaukee, the Golden Eagles took 21 shots and held UWM to just three. 10 of those shots were on goal. MU also owned an edge on corner kicks as it took 11 kicks and held the Panthers to zero. In goal, Schunk earned her second win and second shutout of the season.

Crosstown Foes: Friday's matchup was the 21st all-time meeting between Marquette and Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles now own an 8-7-6 edge over UWM and have not lost to the Panthers since 1998.

 

 

Miller Named Defensive Player of the Week: Senior Ally Miller has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts in the Golden Eagles' 4-0 victory over St. Bonaventure in the season opener. The senior played 79 minutes and anchored a defensive squad that allowed just two shots with one on goal. Miller also earned an assist. The senior was also named GoMarquette.com's Student-Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week.

Miller, Kelly Earn Preseason Accolades: Senior Ally Miller has been named the Preseason BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and was also named preseason all-league in a survey of the conference's head coaches. Kelly joined Miller on the squad and was also tabbed to the 2012 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. Miller was named All-BIG EAST Third Team in 2011 while Kelly garnered first team accolades.

Miller Being Noticed: Senior Ally Miller has been named to the Soccer America Preseason All-American squad. She is one of five defenders earning the preseason honors. The Mequon, Wis., native has started 63 of the 66 career matches in which she has played and has helped lead Marquette to three-straight division championships and NCAA appearances. She owns three career goals and has helped anchor one of the top defensive units in the nation during her tenure.

Potential Starting Lineup Features Experience: Marquette's probable starting lineup features just one player (Schunk) who isn't at least competing in her respective junior campaign. Eight of the players own at least 30 career starting assignments and that group has combined for 69 total goals.

• Marquette is now 11-7-2 all-time in season openers, including an 11-5-1 mark under head coach Markus Roeders.
• The Golden Eagles welcome back 22 letterwinners and nine starters from a team that a season ago captured MU's third-straight BIG EAST American Division title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship. Six newcomers will join the squad in 2012.
• Since the 2009 season, Marquette is 28-3-2 in BIG EAST Conference play.

Up Next: The Golden Eagles will travel to Northwestern on Friday, Aug. 31 and take on the Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. CT. Marquette returns home on Monday, Sept. 3 for a Labor Day contest against Central Michigan. Kickoff at Valley Fields begins at 7:00 p.m. CT.
