MILWAUKEE--The No. RV/15 Marquette University women's soccer team (1-1) continues the non-conference portion of its schedule when it heads to Minneapolis, Minnesota on Friday, Aug. 29 for a 7 p.m. Central time tilt against the Golden Gophers.
The Golden Eagles split a pair of contes ts against Loyola-Chicago and Northwestern this past weekend during the Marquette Invitational at Valley Fields. In its season opener, MU used a late surge in the second half to defeat the Ramblers 3-0. After being held in check for the majority of the match, Marquette poured in three goals in the final ten minutes, including two tallies that came within 40 seconds of each other by sophomore forward Darian Powell.
MU fell to Northwestern 1-0 in its final action of the weekend, dropping its first home regular season match since 2010. Junior goalkeeper Amanda Engel recorded five saves for the Blue and Gold, and was recognized as a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection for her outstanding performance during the Marquette Invitational.
The Golden Gophers (1-1) also have opened up the 2014 season with a 1-1 record, taking care of Stetson 10-0, but falling to No.2 Florida State 4-1. Minnesota returns its top five goal scorers, although it lost four starters from last year's squad, which finished 11-8-2.
Friday's action will feature a matchup between two of the nation's best goalkeepers in Marquette's Engel and Minnesota's Tarah Hobbs. Hobbs was named the 2013 Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year as a freshman and Engel has collected her fair share of conference's honors since bursting onto the season in 2012.
The Golden Eagles and Golden Gophers have squared off four times, with the first matchup coming in 1993. Minnesota holds a 2-1-1 edge against Marquette all time, but the Golden Eagles were able to oust the Golden Gophers, 1-0 in the most recent action between the squads in 2009.
