Emily Hess is the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Aug. 29, 2016
NEW YORK – After posting a goal and an assist while helping the Marquette University women’s soccer team to two victories, defender Emily Hess was honored as the BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Senior midfielder Morgan Proffitt was also named to the league’s honor roll for her two-way play in helping the Golden Eagles (2-2) even their record on the young season.
Hess made her first career start in Thursday’s 2-1 win at Illinois State and scored her first collegiate goal off a corner kick in the fifth minute. In Sunday’s 2-1 comeback victory over Michigan, she contributed to both goals in the second half. The Batavia, Illinois native drew a foul inside the box in the 51st minute that led to Morgan Proffitt’s equalizing penalty kick, and set up the match winner on a free position kick to Molly Pfeiffer 17 minutes later.
She played all 180 minutes in both matches at left back for the Golden Eagles.
Proffitt, the BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, scored the tying goal against the Wolverines and helped MU hold Illinois State and Michigan to one goal apiece.
Marquette returns to the pitch in the Bay Area on Thursday, Sept. 1 in a 9:30 p.m. match at No. 13 Santa Clara. The Golden Eagles will also face No. 3 Stanford on Sunday afternoon before heading back to Milwaukee.
