Marquette trio earns BIG EAST weekly honors
Sept. 4, 2017
MILWAUKEE – Three Marquette University women’s soccer players earned weekly honors from the BIG EAST Conference on Monday afternoon as Maddy Henry was named the league’s goalkeeper of the week, Kylie Sprecher earned top freshman accolades and Ryley Bugay landed on the honor roll.
The Golden Eagles (5-1) picked up their fourth and fifth victories of the year over the weekend with a pair of shutouts against Central Michigan (1-0) and Mercer (2-0). In the process they stretched their opponent scoreless streak to 381:55 and counting as Henry picked up her sixth career clean sheet on Friday against the Chippewas.
A unanimous All-BIG EAST Freshman Team selection in 2016, Henry has now earned weekly conference honors in each of the last three weeks and has started all 28 matches in her collegiate career.
Sprecher, who was the offensive most valuable player at the Marquette Invitational, scored her first career goal on Friday evening and assisted on Eli Beard’s match winner on Sunday evening. The honor is the first of her young career.
Bugay, a redshirt junior, also earns the first weekly accolade of her career after being named defensive MVP over the weekend as part of Marquette’s stout defensive unit.
The Golden Eagles resume non-conference action this weekend on the East Coast with matches at Boston University on Friday, Sept. 8 and at Rhode Island on Sunday, Sept. 10.
