MILWAUKEE--Junior goalkeeper Amanda Engel has been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for her play in the Colorado College Invitational, the league announced Monday.

Engel lead the Golden Eagles in matches against New Mexico and Colorado College this past weekend in Colorado Springs. The Centennial, Colorado native, in a homecoming of sorts, went unbeaten notching a 1-0-1 record in two matches in her home state.

Engel steered the Blue and Gold to a 2-1 victory over New Mexico on Friday, recording two saves and shutting down the Lobos after they scored early in the match. Engel followed her excellent performance against New Mexico with a shutout against the Colorado College Tigers on Sunday, in which she collected seven saves in 200 minutes of soccer. The Marquette keeper kept the Tigers off the board for a full 90 minutes plus two overtime periods.

"Amanda had a great weekend and made some key saves in our undefeated weekend. She is really stepping up behind a newly formed back line and growing in her role as a veteran goalie and leader," said Head Coach Markus Roeders. "We are looking forward to her continued improvement and look for her to be a rock in the net for our squad."

Engel and the Golden Eagles return to the pitch this Thursday, August 11, when they host Wisconsin-Milwaukee at Valley Fields at 7 p.m. Central time.
