Sprecher and Powell garner BIG EAST weekly honors
Sept. 11, 2017
NEW YORK – Marquette University forward Kylie Sprecher repeated as the BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week and graduate student Darian Powell was named to the league’s weekly honor roll for women’s soccer, it was announced on Monday afternoon.
The pair combined on two goals in MU’s victories over the weekend at Boston University on Friday and Sunday at Rhode Island. The two wins pushed the Golden Eagles to 7-1 on the year and seven straight wins since a season-opening loss to then-No. 2 Stanford on Aug. 18.
Sprecher scored the only goal on MU’s lone shot in the 24th minute of the 1-0 victory over the Terriers on Friday and then assisted Powell’s match winner on Sunday. She sits tied for second on the Marquette roster with seven points (two goals, three assists) and has posted a point in each of the last four matches.
Powell earns her first accolade of the year after assisting Sprecher’s tally at BU and scoring her eighth career match winner on Sunday in the 57th minute. She is now tied for eighth all-time at MU in game winners and ninth in program history with 21 career goals.
The La Porte City, Iowa native has recorded points in six of Marquette’s eighth matches this season and her four assists outpaces her career total of three helpers entering the 2017 campaign. She currently tops MU with 10 points on three goals and four assists.
The Golden Eagles resume action on Thursday, Sept. 14 against preseason MVC favorite Illinois State at Valley Fields. The 7 p.m. match will be broadcast live on Spectrum Sports Wisconsin.
