Sept. 18, 2007
MILWAUKEE - Junior defender Katie Kelly received two additional national accolades for the 2007 season as she was named to Soccer America's National Team of the Week and to the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week on Tuesday. It is the second consecutive week a Golden Eagle has been recognized by a national publication. Fellow defender Shannon Cusick was named to the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week last week. In the national polls, Marquette improved to No. 24 in both of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll and the Soccer Times poll. The Golden Eagles are also No. 12 according to Soccer Buzz and No. 23 by Soccer America. Marquette (7-0) is off to its best start in school history, and are one of just four teams in the nation to be undefeated and untied. Stanford (6-0), South Carolina (7-0) and North Texas (7-0) are the others.
Kelly helped Marquette to record three wins for the week, two of which were shutouts, over Green Bay (2-0), Loyola (Md.) (3-1), and Rhode Island (4-0). While tallying two assists, Kelly helped limit MU's last three opponents to just six shots on goal. Kelly has six assists for the season, four of which have come from either corner kicks or free kicks. The junior from Kansas City, Mo., stands 10th in the nation for assists per game with 0.86.
