Johnston named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Sept. 19, 2016
NEW YORK - Marquette University senior Meegan Johnston was named to the BIG EAST Conference Weekly Honor Roll after helping the MU women's soccer team to a 2-0 week with a pair of goals and an assist in wins over Cal Poly and CSUN in the Marquette Invitational.
Johnston posted her first two goals of the season in the first half against CSUN on Sunday and an assist on a free kick in Friday's win over Cal Poly. Sunday's goals were only her second and third in a Marquette uniform and the first time she had scored since a match against Creighton on Sept. 25, 2014.
The Grayslake, Illinois native earned Marquette Invitational Offensive Most Valuable Player honors for her play over the weekend and Monday's honor roll mention is the first conference accolade of her career.
Johnston's first goal on Sunday came in the fifth minute from deep in the left corner. The senior corralled the ball along the goal line and sent a volley back into the box that was lifted over the CSUN keeper and tucked inside the far post.
It took just seven minutes for Johnston to strike again, this time on a cross from Proffitt. Proffitt found Johnston at the very top of the 18-yard box and her second goal of the day came as she flicked a header to beat the keeper on the right side of the net.
The Golden Eagles (4-4-2), who sit No. 44 in the first NCAA RPI rankings of the season, resume action with their first BIG EAST match on Sunday, Sept. 25 at Creighton.
