Weekly Honors Pour In for MU
Sept. 26, 2011
MILWAUKEE - Freshman defender Haley Fritzlen, sophomore forward Maegan Kelly, and senior goalkeeper Natalie Kulla were honored for their roles in the No. 14/15 Marquette University women's soccer team's two overtime wins last week. Fritzlen was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, Kelly was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll and to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Team of the Week, and Kulla was selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Fritzlen earned BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors for the first time of her career following a 2-0-0 week for the Golden Eagles. Fritzlen played all 98 minutes in a 2-1 overtime win against DePaul on Sept. 22 and also played the entire game in a 3-2 overtime win against then-No. 20/24 Notre Dame. She helped hold Irish All-America selection Melissa Henderson to just two shots.
Kelly totaled five points last week on two goals and one assist in the overtime wins over DePaul and Notre Dame. Against the Fighting Irish, Kelly scored the second goal and delivered the game-tying assist of Taylor Madigan's game winner 18 seconds into overtime. She also registered the first goal in the sixth minute against DePaul. Her two goals for the week gave the sophomore from Kansas City a team-leading 11 goals and she became the first Golden Eagle since 2002 to register 10-or-more goals in a single season.
It is Kelly's second honor roll selection and her third TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week nod of the season.
Kulla directed Marquette's defensive effort and registered six saves in the two wins. She had three stops against DePaul and three saves against then-No. 20/24 Notre Dame. MU's defense limited ND to a season-low nine shots with just six shots on-goal.
The Golden Eagles will continue cross-divisional play at Louisville on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT.
