Marquette Hosts Villanova on Sunday

The Marquette Golden Eagles (5-5-1,1-0), look to finish off a perfect 4-0 homestand, when they host the Villanova Wildcats (3-5-2, 1-0) for a 1 p.m. Central time tilt Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields. The game will be streamed live free of charge on the BIG EAST Digital Network by accessing Fox Sports GO. The match will feature Patrick Reed on the play-by-play while Matt Schroeder will handle the color commentary.
MU collected its third-consecutive victory this past Thursday in its BIG EAST Conference opener against Creighton, notching a season-high seven goals against the Bluejays. Six different Golden Eagles scored in the win, including senior midfielder Mary Luba who netted two goals and and two assists, totaling six points. Sophomore Meegan Johnston, senior Mady Vicker , and senior Haley Fritzlen all registered their first goals of the season. Fritzlen's score in the conference lidlifter was the first of her Marquette career. Junior Jacie Jermier recorded her team-high fourth goal against Creighton, while Liz Bartels found the back of the net for the second time.
Villanova also collected a win in its BIG EAST Conference opener, defeating the Butler Bulldogs 1-0 on the road. After a scoreless first 45 minutes of action, junior Christina Camassa scored the game-winning tally in the 68th minute. Despite being outshot 11-3, the Wildcats were able to begin their conference campaign in the win column.
SERIES HISTORY: The Golden Eagles tout an unblemished 5-0 all-time mark against the Villanova Wildcats, in a series that dates back to 2006. Four of the five matchups between the two programs have resulted in 1-0 shutout victories for Marquette, including last season at Villanova.
CONFERENCE SUCCESS: MU has dropped just one BIG EAST matchup over the past three plus seasons, posting a near unblemished mark of 21-1-1. The Golden Eagles enter the 2014 conference campaign riding a 29-game unbeaten streak in BIG EAST play. The Blue and Gold did not suffer any conference losses in 2013, finishing with a perfect 9-0 mark in BIG EAST action. In its tenth season of BIG EAST play, Marquette has an excellent mark of 9-1 in league lidlifters, including its 7-2 triumph over Creighton this past Thursday.
JERMIER COLLECTS CONFERENCE HONOR: Junior midfielder Jacie Jermier was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Jermier helped anchor the Marquette defensive unit which allowed just one goal in two matches this past week. The McFarland, Wis. native, played a pivotal role in Marquette's victories over No.16 and previously unbeaten Kansas and LSU. Jermier and the Golden Eagles held the Jayhawks to just three shots on goal in their victory. Along with her stingy defense, Jermier provided the game-winning score on a free kick against Kansas.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: 13 different Golden Eagles have recorded goals so far this season, with Jacie Jermier pacing the squad with four goals. Mary Luba, Eli Beard, Liz Bartels and Darian Powell have all netted two, while Meegan Johnston, Haley Fritzlen, Mady Vicker, Alex Heffron, Ashley Handwork, Heather Handwork, Caroline Fink, and Shalese Miller all have notched one goal so far this season.
OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION: Marquette's seven goals this past Thursday against Creighton were its most since it recorded nine goals against North Dakota in 2011.
HOT SHOOTING: The Golden Eagles currently rank third in the BIG EAST Conference in terms of total shots with 150 attempts in their 11 contests. MU has not dropped a match that it has won or tied the total shot tally in.
WELCOME TO THE VALLEY: Marquette has been tough to beat on its home pitch and owns a 51-7-5 record throughout the past four plus seasons for a true home-field advantage.
FRESHMEN FEATURED: Three freshmen, Eli Beard, Caroline Fink and Heather Handwork, have already found the back of the net for Marquette so far this season. Eight freshmen have already appeared in matches for the Golden Eagles and have recorded a total of 1,157 minutes played as a group.
