BIG EAST Release

NEW YORK – Marquette University senior midfielder Morgan Proffitt was named the BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week, while goalkeeper Maddy Henry and forward Carrie Madden were each recognized on the women’s soccer weekly honor roll.

The Golden Eagles (6-5-2, 2-1-0 BIG EAST) went 2-0 over the last week with a 2-1 victory over Seton Hall on Thursday and a 2-0 triumph over St. John’s on Sunday afternoon to kick off Marquette Homecoming Week.

Proffitt scored the match winner on Sunday afternoon on a gorgeous strike from 20 yards out over the outstretched arms of BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year Diana Poulin. The MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List member helped the Golden Eagles shutout St. John’s for the first time in BIG EAST play since the 2014 season finale and aided the MU offense in posting a pair of goals against a SJU defense that entered the match having allowed just four goals through the first 11 contests of 2016. She also posted an assist in MU’s victory over Seton Hall.

Henry posted the first clean sheet of her career with six saves against the Red Storm on Sunday and also made a save to help MU pick up its first BIG EAST victory on Thursday.

Madden, who has recorded points in Marquette’s last five matches, posted the match winner against the Pirates and added an assist on Sunday on Caroline Fink’s insurance goal early in the second half.

The BIG EAST honors are the first of their careers for Madden and Henry, while Proffitt’s recognition is her third weekly recognition of 2016.

Marquette resumes play on Thursday, Oct. 6 against Xavier at NKU Soccer Stadium in Highland Heights, Kentucky as Xavier’s facilities recover from recent severe weather. The Golden Eagles will then head to Providence to face the Friars on Sunday afternoon.
