BIG EAST Release

NEW YORK – Thanks to a pair of 1-0 shutout victories over Xavier and Providence, Marquette University women’s soccer players Erin Holland, Amanda Engel and Liz Bartels were recognized by the BIG EAST Conference on Monday afternoon.

Holland was named the league’s defensive player of the week and Engel earned goalkeeper of the week accolades, while Bartels was recognized on the conference’s weekly honor roll.

Holland and Engel worked as part of a Marquette defensive unit that did not allow a goal to the Musketeers or Friars in over 181 minutes. The pair helped the Golden Eagles to their second and third shutouts of the season and the first since a 3-0 victory over Boston University on Aug. 30.

The shutouts were the 25th and 26th of Engel’s career as the senior keeper recorded a pair of saves in Thursday’s overtime victory over Xavier and four saves Sunday against the Friars. Holland controlled the center of the pitch for MU’s backline and has been a mainstay of the Golden Eagles’ defense since her return from last year’s season-ending knee injury.

Bartels’ weekly recognition is her second of the season after scoring the winning tally on Sunday afternoon against Providence. The junior fired a match-high four shots against Xavier on Thursday and a pair on net Sunday.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, Oct. 18 against Georgetown in Washington, D.C. in a contest broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network at noon Central time.
