Oct. 18, 2006
MILWAUKEE - Sophomore defender Katie Kelly collected two national weekly honors announced Wednesday as she was named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week and to Soccer America Women's Team of the Week for her contributions in Marquette's consecutive wins last weekend. This is Kelly's second and third honors of the week as she was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Oct. 16. It is also her second selection by Soccer Buzz for her career as she was named to the Elite Team of the Week on Sept. 14, 2005.
Kelly earned the honors for her play last weekend tallying two assists in conference wins over Cincinnati (2-0) on Friday and No. 17 Louisville (1-0) on Sunday. She assisted senior Meghan Connelly's goal in a 2-0 win over Cincinnati and set up the game winner against Louisville on a corner kick that freshman Anna Sawicki was able to get her head on and knock in. An integral member of Marquette's backline, Kelly not only helped the Golden Eagles to back-to-back shutouts but aided in Marquette's defensive scheme to hold Louisville to six shots for the game and just two on goal as well.
On Tuesday, Oct. 17, Kelly assisted consecutive goals in Marquette's 5-0 shutout win over Wis.-Green Bay. With four assists in the last three games, Kelly leads the Golden Eagles in helpers with seven for the season tying a sophomore season record.
Marquette will hit the road this weekend for its final road trip of the regular season when it travels to New York to play Syracuse on Friday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. ET and St. John's on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. ET.
