Morgan Proffitt earns BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Oct. 31, 2016
NEW YORK – After helping the Marquette University women’s soccer team to a share of its sixth BIG EAST Conference regular season championship, senior midfielder Morgan Proffitt was honored as the league’s defensive player of the week and junior Eli Beard was named to the weekly honor roll.
Proffitt tied a career best with two goals to help the Golden Eagles (11-6-2, 7-2-0 BIG EAST) erase a pair of deficits during regulation against DePaul on Friday night. The Columbus, Indiana native scored during the 42nd and 79th minutes before Beard scored the match-winning tally just 57 seconds into overtime for the 3-2 victory.
Proffitt now leads Marquette with five goals and three assists for 13 points on the season and is a candidate for the MAC Hermann Trophy and the Senior CLASS Award. She started her 80th career match on Friday to move into a tie for eighth in the MU career record book.
Beard’s goal came on her lone shot of the contest after playing 27 minutes as a reserve midfielder. It is the first tally for the Portland, Oregon native this year and the third game winner of her career.
The accolade is the fifth weekly honor of the season for Proffitt, while Beard is garnering the first conference recognition of her career.
The Golden Eagles resume action in the BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Championship semifinals on Friday, Nov. 4 at 10:30 a.m. Central time in Washington, D.C., against the winner of Tuesday’s quarterfinal match between St. John’s and Providence. Marquette defeated both squads by 2-0 margins earlier this season.
