BIG EAST Release

NEW YORK – A quintet of Marquette University women’s soccer players were awarded all-league honors by the BIG EAST Conference on Tuesday afternoon, led by redshirt senior Jacie Jermier and junior Morgan Proffitt, both of whom earned first team accolades. Juniors Liz Bartels and Darian Powell were honored as second team selections, while Jamie Kutey was named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.

“Congratulations to all five for being named All-BIG EAST,” 20th-year Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. “They are very deserving to be recognized among the best in the league, and although all of them deserve these individual awards, they will be the first to give credit to their teammates and acknowledge that they couldn't be successful without them. We are very proud of each honored individual.”

Both Jermier and Proffitt have played key roles this season for the Golden Eagles in their defensive unit and in the midfield, while the pair has chipped in offensively. Heading into Tuesday’s BIG EAST tournament quarterfinal match at Butler, Jermier is tied for second on MU with 10 points coming off a pair of goals and a team-high six assists. She was a Senior CLASS Award candidate earlier this season and was an all-tournament performer at last season’s conference championship, as well as an all-league second team selection in 2014.

“Jacie and Mo are certainly among the top defensive players who also get involved in the offensive half,” Roeders said. “Both are big personality players who have influenced our success all year.”

Proffitt was an All-BIG EAST Preseason Team selection and earned second team all-conference recognition along with Jermier last season. The Columbus, Indiana native has scored three goals this season and earned BIG EAST weekly recognition on three occasions, including a pair of defensive player of the week honors.

Bartels was also an All-BIG EAST Preseason Team selection this year after earning first team all-league honors at the conclusion of last season. She has posted three goals and four assists on the year and owns a pair of match winners against Boston University and Providence.

Powell is currently Marquette’s leading scorer with 15 points on seven goals and one assist and tallied four goals over the final three matches of the regular season. The La Porte City, Iowa native also led the Golden Eagles with seven goals last season in her first campaign on the pitch and is the only Golden Eagle to average over a point-per-match in conference action.

The lone freshman to receive recognition is midfieler/forward Jamie Kutey who has earned her way back into the starting lineup and provided a spark up front. Kutey scored the match-winning goal against Northern Arizona on Sept. 11 and assisted Ashley Handwork’s goals against Creighton in the BIG EAST lid-lifter on Sept. 27.

“Lizzy and Darian are always dangerous in our attack, scoring and creating opportunities, making them elite among offensive players in the BIG EAST,” Roeders said. “Darian is definitely coming into full stride with her scoring as of late and for Jamie to be recognized as a young rising star speaks for her play and her bright future.”

The fifth-seeded Golden Eagles (8-7-4) will face the fourth-seeded Butler Bulldogs (13-6-1) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Central time in the BIG EAST Championship quarterfinals at the Butler Bowl in Indianapolis. The match can be viewed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network through FOX Sports Go.
