Connelly's Goal Lifts No. 12 Golden Eagles to 1-0 Win Over Wis.-Milwaukee in NCAA Second Round

It took two full, action-packed matches - one in the regular season and another in the postseason, one up the road and one at Valley Fields.

It took almost 200 minutes and nine Marquette shots-on-goal, before the 10th attempt found the back of the net.

It took a toe from Meghan Connelly with :20 seconds remaining in the second round of the NCAA Tournament before the two local rivals finally had a winner.

Sixty-seven days later - and 41 degrees colder - Marquette earned a 1-0 victory over Wis.-Milwaukee at Valley Fields.

Off the foot of the junior midfielder, the Blue & Gold advanced to the farthest point in the NCAA Tournament in program history. The No. 12 ranked Golden Eagles will now travel to Los Angeles, Calif. to face No. 4 UCLA on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. CST.

"It is history-in-the-making for Marquette," said a jubilant head coach Markus Roeders. "I don't really have alot of words right now, but we're very excited. We're going to enjoy the moment and then prepare for a very tough opponent in UCLA."

From the beginning of the match - which was delayed six hours due to heavy wind conditions in the Milwaukee-area - it was evident that it would be a defensive battle. Neither the Panthers nor the Golden Eagles had very many offensive chances in the first half, each taking eight shots with MU putting four on goal to UWM's three.

In the second half, Marquette's defensive front shut down the Panthers, while not yielding a shot-on-goal through the second 45:00 of play. And as time was winding down in regulation, it was an MU defender - Katie Kelly - that began the scramble that eventually led to the gamewinning goal.

"It was a great ball into the box and it broke out," said Connelly of her sixth goal of the season - and second of the gamewinning fashion. "I wasn't sure if Christy (Zwolski) or I would get to it first, but I knew someone had to, and I went for it."

"Now we get to go to California, we've got nothing to lose, we've never been this far before, and we're going to give it our all." Connelly added.

"What can you say, she (Connelly) finished a tough, back-and-forth match." said Roeders. "Both teams spent the whole match looking for one moment of brilliance. It was a true team effort from a team that has done this all season long."

He added: "It is a credit to our leadership on the field, their maturity and level of confidence that has allowed us to win in the latter part of several matches this season. In fact, I can only really think of two situations this season where we weren't in it or had a chance to win in the second half. It's a unique trait - as the season has progressed, the more it has improved."

"These late plays are pretty much the story of our season," said sophomore goalkeeper Laura Boyer, who earned her second consecutive and 11th total shutout of the season, "It truly is exciting."
