Jody Bronson

Jody Bronson is in her 18th season as head coach of the Marquette women's tennis program. Since her inaugural season in 1985-86, Bronson has guided her team to 12 winning seasons, including three conference championships and five runner-up showings.

Each of the last two seasons, Bronson's team has fought of season-long injuries to key players as she led Marquette to improbable runs in the Conference USA Tournament. Last season, the team finished second in the tourney and had a shot at winning. Their final record was 18-6. Two years ago, the team finished third after an 8-14 season.

In 1999-2000, Bronson coached the Golden Eagles to a winning record for the fourth season in a row. The team also finished third in Conference USA.

During the 1998-99 campaign, Bronson led Marquette to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season and won the first NCAA match in Golden Eagle's women's tennis history. Marquette also earned bids to the singles and doubles championships for the third year in a row. The Golden Eagles finished the year with a 19-6 record and were ranked 25th in the nation, the best year-end ranking in Marquette history.

Bronson was honored as the Conference USA Coach of the Year after guiding the Golden Eagles to their first-ever C-USA title and was also named the Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year for the Midwest Region.

Under Bronson's guidance, the Marquette women's tennis program also won the first-ever Great Midwest Conference title in 1992 and the North Star Conference crown in 1988. In addition, Marquette posted two runner-up showings in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (1989 and 1990) and one each in the North Star Conference (1986), the Great Midwest Conference (1994) and Conference USA (1997). Bronson's 19-2 1989 North Star Conference championship team marked the best season in Marquette women's tennis history. Her career collegiate coaching record is 222-145 for a .605 winning percentage. Bronson's teams have never finished lower than third in conference competition in her 13-year coaching career.

Bronson led her team to the inaugural Great Midwest Conference Championship in 1992. For her efforts, she was awarded the Great Midwest Conference Coach of the Year. In addition to these honors, Bronson was named the 1989 North Star Conference Coach of the Year after guiding her team to a first-place league finish and a school-record 19-2 mark. Her 1986 team won 20 matches and placed second in the North Star Conference.

Prior to joining the Marquette athletic staff, Bronson served as a highly-regarded tennis instructor at Le Club Tennis Club (1976-89), Brynwood Country Club (1975), North Shore Tennis Club (1974) and the Milwaukee Country Club (1972). She was also involved in an inner-city tennis program sponsored by the Wisconsin Tennis Association (1970 and 1971). Bronson and her husband Walter were certified as professional instructors in 1979 at Vic Braden's Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

As a player, Bronson won the 35 doubles consolation bracket at the Women's National Indoor Championships in 1990. In 1991, Bronson placed third in that same competition. She consistently has been ranked in the Western and Wisconsin State singles and doubles competition. In 1983, she received a No. 2 Western ranking in women's doubles and was ranked fifth in singles in the Western region.

Bronson's husband, Walter, is the head tennis professional at Le Club. The couple have three children: Corey, 25, Lindsay, 21, and Tanner, 17. The Bronson family resides in Glendale.
