Women's Tennis Opens at the Hoosier Classic

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.--The Marquette University women's tennis team kicked off its spring season with the Hoosier Winter Classic, hosted by Indiana University on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles opened day one with doubles and singles victories in their first competition since November and a tune up before beginning dual matches next weekend.

Diana Tokar and Courtney Hebard defeated Abilene Christian University in easy 6-1 fashion in the first round of doubles and continued that momentum with a 6-2 decision over Wright State in the second round.

Silvia Ambrosio and Erin Gebes teamed up for two victories today and knocked off Alilene Christian, 6-3 in the first round before earning a victory over Wright State, 6-2.

In singles action Gebes defeated Lucille Pothier from Abilene Christian, 6-2, 6-3, while Paula Tormos Sanchez stormed back to earn a 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 decision over ACU.

Alleeza Kanner and Leoni Daems also earned singles victories over ACU, 6-3, 6-2, and 6-3, 6-0, respectively.

"The team got some good matches in today," head coach Jody Bronson said. "We are looking to build upon these performances and get into a competitive mindset for the dual match season beginning next week."

Marquette continues tournament action tomorrow with both singles and doubles matches in Bloomington.
