Marquette Defeats UIC, 4-3

MILWAUKEE - MU won the doubles point, and Gillian Hush, Christina Ruiz and Olga Fischer each posted singles win to lead the Marquette University women's tennis team to its first dual win of the season. The Golden Eagles defeated UIC, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
In a closely contested match from the start the Golden Eagles earned the first point of the day by winning all three doubles matches.
Gillian Hush and Chelsea Utting pulled out a 9-7 win over Jane Knoppe and Ilinca Cristescu at No. 3 doubles. MU's No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams both played to tie-breakers to win their respective matches. Christina Ruiz and Rachael Hush won 9-8 (8-4) win at No. 1 and Paola Calderon and Rocio Diaz capped the doubles sweep with a 9-8 (7-2) win at No. 2.
Teona Tsertsvadze made it 1-1 with a win over Calderon in straight sets at No. 3 (6-3, 6-3). Moments later Gillian Hush took care of Knoppe at No. 5, 6-3, 6-4, to give the lead back to Marquette, 2-1.
UIC owned a 3-2 lead following wins at No. 4 and No. 1, but Christina Ruiz held on to defeat Kathryn Sharples, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) at No. 6 to tie the score up at 3-3 and leave the No. 2 singles contest between Fischer and Simonetti to decide the match.
After dropping the first set, 7-5, Fischer rallied to win the second and third sets, 6-3, 6-3, and clinch the win for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Jan. 29 when they play at Purdue at 12 p.m. ET/11 a.m. CT.
