MILWAUKEE--The Marquette women's tennis squad opened the 2016 dual match season with a decisive start in a 7-0 sweep over Milwaukee on Saturday at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
Marquette (1-0) swept the doubles point as Leoni Daems and Diana Tokar set the tone for the match with a quick 6-1 victory at the No. 2 slot. The tandem of Silvia Ambrosio and Erin Gebes clinched the point with a 6-3 win at the No. 1 positions and Aleeza Kanner and Paula Tormos Sanchez stayed strong and fought to a 6-4 decision at No. 3.
The Golden Eagles did not drop a singles set en route to their singles victory. Tormos Sanchez played an excellent game for a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4, while Amborsio and Daems earned their first career dual singles' wins on Saturday. Daems clinched the match victory for MU with her 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles, while Kanner played through a tough match at No. 5 singles to earn an 11-9 tiebreak victory and take the match, 6-2, 7-6.
"It is nice to start off our dual season with a win against a team that is coached very well and fights hard no matter the score," said head coach Jody Bronson. "We had to tighten up our play in doubles to clinch all three matches and had to work hard and fight for every point in singles. This match sets a good tone for the team to start the 2016 season. The team fought hard and showed a lot of character today which we are looking to continue.'
