Jan. 25, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Marquette women's tennis team dropped its second consecutive match to a Top 30 team Sunday afternoon as No. 30 Indiana handed the Golden Eagles a 7-0 loss. With the loss MU stands at 2-2 overall on the season.
It was not without a fight that the Golden Eagles faltered on the road. The day was extremely competitive starting with doubles play. Indiana clinched all three doubles matches to earn the first point of the day.
"We were excited and energized to play today," said head coach Jody Bronson. Our scores were close and we played better than we played Friday. We were more aggressive and showed a lot of improvement. I just know as we move through the season we are going to continue to get better."
Singles play was also highly competitive as three Golden Eagles lost sets in tie breakers and senior Robin Metzler narrowly lost her match at No. 5 in three sets. IU's Lindsey Stuckey pulled out the victory, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0, over Metzler.
Sophomore Rachael Hush fell 7-6, 6-3 to Alba Berdala at No. 3. Freshman Olga Fischer was unable to hold on in her second set falling 6-3, 7-6 to Sigrid Fischer at No. 4, and Kylie Moore was upended at No. 6, 7-5, 7-6, by Megan Matter.
The Golden Eagles will return to action Friday, Jan. 30 when they host IUPUI at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. Doubles play will begin at 5 p.m.
