MU Claims 5-2 Victory over UIC

MILWAUKEE--The Marquette women's tennis team (1-0) opened dual play for the 2014 season with a 5-2 victory over the University Illinois-Chicago on Saturday afternoon at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
MU got off to a strong start with a doubles sweep over the Flames. Junior Ali Dawson and Laia Hernandez Soler teamed up at No. 1 doubles and earned a 6-2 victory. Senior Rocio Diaz joined sophomore Erin Gebes for a 6-1 win over their opponents on the No. 2 court, while juniors Ana Pimienta and Vanessa Foltinger had an easy time at No. 3 doubles with a 6-2 decision.
In singles, MU won four of the six matches with wins at the No. 1- No. 4 courts. Pimienta defeated Mariana Palacios handily, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, while Gebes held on and knocked off Natalia Kuvakina on the No. 2 court, 6-0, 3-6, 10-1. Hernandez Soler won at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-2 and Dawson stayed strong for a 6-1, 7-6 victory at the fourth position.
The Golden Eagles will remain home and continue a four-match homestand, hosting a doubleheader with Wisconsin at Noon on Feb. 1, followed by Valparaiso at 6 p.m. Central time.
