Women's Tennis Loses a Nail-Biter to Louisville, 4-3
Jan. 26, 2007
Milwaukee - The Marquette women's tennis squad returned to action for their second match of the young season, losing to Louisville, 4-3. Marquette had an advantage early on, winning a singles point and a match that helped them capture the doubles point by default. Only needing one win in the doubles to grab the point, Maria Calbeto and Kylie Moore defeated Natalia Baez and Bianca Gorbea, 8-4. Louisville won the first three singles matches to put the overall score at 3-2 in its favor. Marquette came back on the shoulders of Maria Calberto and Robin Metzler only to fall short. Calberto and Metzler both dropped their first set, but both won their second to tie the matches at 1-1 and send both into a third frame. It looked as though the two were in control as Calberto went up 4-2 in the final set before eventually losing. Metzler ended up winning in a tie-breaker but only after the result of the entire match was no longer in doubt. "This one hurts," said head coach Jody Bronson. "We could have had it but we let it slip away. We need to be better, more aggressive, and stronger" Louisville def Marquette, 4-3 Doubles Singles
