MILWAUKEE-- The Marquette women's tennis team continued its strong start to the season with a 6-1 victory over UIC on Friday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

Marquette got on the board first claiming the doubles point as Diana Tokar and Leoni Daems won a 6-2 decision at the No. 2 spot, while Paula Tormos Sanchez and Aleeza Kanner also won, 6-2, at the No. 3 position. Erin Gebes and Silvia Ambrosio were leading 4-3, but did not play their entire match.

Tokar gave MU its first doubles point in the match easily winning, 6-2, 6-0, on court three, while Tormos Sanchez followed with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 position.

Kanner claimed a 6-3, 6-2 victory on court five, which clinched the win for the Golden Eagles, while Gebes stayed strong in a tough No. 2 battle to win, 7-5, 6-1. Courtney Hebard wrapped up the final point of the day as she worked her way through a 7-5, 6-4 win at the No. 6 position.

"Earning the doubles point helps carry the energy into singles," head coach Jody Bronson said. "For the most part I thought we played pretty well and I think Diana (Tokar) continues to stand out at the level that she is playing. Aleeza (Kanner) has stepped up this year after not playing singles as much. Now we will rest up and prepare for Wisconsin on Sunday."

The Golden Eagles will be back on the court on Sunday, Jan. 31 when the squad hosts in-state rival, Wisconsin at 1 p.m. Central time.
