MU Women's Tennis defeats IUPUI

Jan. 30, 2009

Milwaukee - The Marquette women's tennis team halted its two match losing skid by picking up a 7-0 win over IUPUI on Friday evening at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium. With the victory Marquette improved to 3-2 on the 2009 spring campaign while IUPUI dropped to 0-3. Due to IUPUI's limited roster of just five players, only two of the three doubles matches were held while the singles competition saw just four matches.

"I thought we came out aggressive and tried to really dictate points," said head coach Jody Bronson. "We wanted to be the aggressor in this match because it's they way we need to be when we play nationally ranked teams."

The Golden Eagles notched the doubles point with an 8-0 win from freshman Paola Calderon and senior Robin Metzler while the freshman duo of Gillian Hush and Olga Fischer also swept their opponents, 8-0.

In the singles portion, Calderon, Hush and Fischer each took (6-0, 6-0) matches from the Panthers while junior Elly Strother cruised to a (6-1, 6-0) victory over IUPUI's Sondra Caputo.

"For the singles, we only played four so I wanted my kids to just play hard and not be afraid to take any kind of shot," said Bronson. "We were able to work on a lot of our shots so I was very pleased with that."

Marquette returns to the court with double header action on Sunday, Feb. 1. Play will begin against Northern Illinois at 10 a.m. followed by a 3 p.m. contest against Green Bay. Both matches will take place at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
