Marquette Tops Northern Illinois and Green Bay, 7-0

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team earned a pair of 7-0 victroies of Northern Illinois and Green Bay Sunday at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. With the wins, the Golden Eagles improve to 5-2 overall on the season.
Against the Huskies, the Golden Eagles won two doubles matches en route to the first point of the day. Sophomore Christina Ruiz and senior Robin Metzler took down Lillian Asuaje and Sara McLaughlin, 8-0, while the freshman duo of Gillian Hush and Olga Fischer shut out Emily Rogers and Katie Friedlund, 8-0 at No. 3.
In singles action the Golden Eagles top of the line-up had little trouble with the Huskies. Freshman Paola Calderon took down Lilian Asuaje, 6-4, 6-3. Fischer and Ruiz followed with wins over their NIU counterparts. Fischer defeated Katie Friedlund in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, and Ruiz surrendered just two set points to Martina Schnapp, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3.
Against Green Bay, Marquette switched up the doubles teams moving Metzler with Ruiz to No. 1 and pairing sophomore Maggie Wilson with Kylie Moore. All three doubles tandems prevailed; 8-1 at No. 1, 8-3 at No. 2 and 8-0 at No. 3.
The lineup was also switched up in singles with Fischer competing at No. 1, Ruiz at No. 2, Metzler at No. 3, freshman Gillian Hush at No. 4, junior Elly Strother at No. 5 and Wilson at No. 6. All six singles players cruised to victories over their Phoenix opponents in dominating fashion only giving up 10 set points.
The Golden Eagles will return to action Friday, Feb. 6 at Helfaer Tennis Stadium when they take on Louisville. Doubles play starts at 3 p.m.
