Marquette Dominates over UIC

The Marquette women’s tennis team (2-2) opened competition on its home court in dominating fashion on Friday night as the Golden Eagles defeated UIC, 6-1 at the Helfaer Tennis Center.
MU opened the match with a doubles sweep to win the first point. At No. 2 doubles sophomore Ana Pimienta and freshman Erin Gebes sealed the victory with an 8-0 sweep over their Flames’ opponents. Freshmen classmates Aina Hernandez Soler and Aleeza Kanner also swept at No. 3 doubles, while sophomore Ali Dawson and junior Rocio Diaz dropped just three games within the set.
In singles action, freshman Laia Hernandez Soler made quick work of Jana Knoppe in the No. 5 slot and won in a 6-1, 6-0 decision to finish well before the other courts. At No. 1 singles Pimienta defeated Craig 6-4, 6-2. Dawson rebounded after dropping the first set, 4-6, and posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the third singles spot. Freshman Aleeza Kanner held on to win at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 7-6.
The Golden Eagles return to Helfaer on Sunday, Feb. 3 when they host Milwaukee at 10 a.m. followed by Green Bay at 3:30 p.m.
