Marquette Sweeps Green Bay, 7-0
Feb. 3, 2013
The Marquette women's tennis team concluded a successful weekend with a 7-0 sweep over Green Bay on Sunday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The sweep was MU's second of the day and third victory in a weekend of competition.
It was a great weekend for the team, defending our home court with three wins over UIC, UWM & Green Bay," head coach Jody Bronson said. "Against UIC we had to come from behind in four matches and showed our fortitude in winning the match 6-1. UWM and Green Bay gave us some challenge and we were able to win 7-0 in both matches. Our young players are gaining some confidence and we hope to take that on the road next weekend and be successful."
The Golden Eagles were dominant in doubles play, losing just four total sets between the three courts.
In singles action, sophomore Ana Pimienta made quick work of her opponent, Stephanie Londre in the No. 1 slot, 6-0, 6-1. Junior Rocio Diaz earned another victory in the second position, 6-1, 6-4 and freshman Aleeza Kanner found hard for her victory, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
Freshman Laia Hernandez Soler played in the No. 4 slot for the first time this weekend and dropped just one set, while classmate Vanessa Foltinger made her first appearance on the court and swept Samantha Iwen in straight sets.
The Golden Eagles will travel to Iowa State next weekend and will face the host school at 1 p.m. CT on Friday, Feb. 8 before playing Western Michigan on Feb. 9 at 2:30 p.m.
