Women's Tennis Upsets No. 42 Louisville
Feb. 6, 2009
The Marquette women's tennis team took down its first ranked opponent of the season in the form of a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over No. 42 Louisville Friday at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The victory pushes the Golden Eagles' win streak to four matches, and helps them improve to 6-2 overall, 1-0 in BIG EAST Conference play.
The win over the 42nd ranked Cardinals marks the 28th time in program history Marquette has defeated a ranked foe.
"To say this is a great win would be an understatement," said head coach Jody Bronson. "I have been saying how special this team is for a while now. They have amazing chemistry which plays a huge part. This team believes in each other and it showed tonight. Even when they were down, they kept pushing each other and knew they could pull off the win."
Louisville got on the board early claiming two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point and a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. Marquette's lone win came from the Hush sisters at No. 3, 8-3 over Lauren Imre and Amelia Harris.
Marquette quickly evened the score and took a 2-1 lead as sophomore Kylie Moore defeated Ashley Irvine, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5 singles and senior Robin Metzler followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Sarah Miller at No. 6.
Louisville's Natalia Baez took down Rachael Hush, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 4 to tie things up 2-2, but the deadlock was short lived as freshmen Olga Fischer and Paola Calderon each earned hard-fought wins at the top of the line-up to clinch the win. Fischer took care of Lindsey Jones, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2, and Calderon defeated Imre at No. 1, 6-4, 6-4.
"Paola and Olga were under a lot of pressure. For two freshman to win at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots against very good Louisville players is something. Everyone is committed. They never gave up and they knew they had the opportunity to beat a really good team," said Bronson.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday against No. 61 Iowa at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. Doubles play begins at 11 a.m.
