No. 71 Minnesota Tops Marquette, 4-3

MILWAUKEE - Despite a valiant effort put forth by the Marquette University women's tennis team, the Golden Eagles came up short against No. 71 Minnesota, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. Olga Fischer, Kelly Barry and Chelsea Utting each picked up singles for MU who moves to 1-3 overall on the season.
The Golden Gophers took an early lead by winning two of three doubles matches en route to the doubles point. Christina Ruiz and Rachael Hush were the lone Golden Eagle tandem to pick up a doubles win at No. 1 over Natallia Pintusava and Yuliana Umanets, 8-4
In singles action, Fischer got Marquette on the board with her decisive 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 51 Natallia Pintusava at No. 1.
Minnesota won the next two points with wins at No. 4 and No. 3, but the Golden Eagles didn't let up and Utting pulled out a three-set thriller in come-from-behind fashion at No. 6 to keep the Golden Eagles alive. Utting defeated Doron Muravnik, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, to mark her first singles win of the dual season.
Minnesota clinched the win at No. 5 as Mariana Spilca narrowly defeated Ruiz, 7-6, 1-6, 7-6 (5).
Barry won the final match of the day as she fought for a 2-6, 7-6 (4) 6-4 win over Yuliana Umanets at No. 2
Marquette continues its season-long six match homestand against Iowa State on Friday, Feb. 11 at 4 p.m.
