No. 61 Iowa Defeats Marquette 5-2
Feb. 8, 2009
MILWAUKEE - The upset minded Marquette women's tennis team fell short to No. 61 Iowa, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The Golden Eagles got singles wins from senior Robin Metzler and freshman Olga Fischer. The loss puts Marquette at 6-3 overall on the season.
"It is a little disappointing considering we played very hard," said head coach Jody Bronson. "When we were ahead, we couldn't keep the pressure on and let them come back. This is a great learning experience. We have to play strong from start to finish in order to get a decision. We needed to keep coming at them and we didn't."
Iowa scored the first team point of the day narrowly winning the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 double. The Hush sister tandem earned the Golden Eagles' lone double victory, an 8-2 win over Jessica Young and Ally Majercik at No. 3. In the deciding doubles match, freshman Paola Calderon and sophomore Kylie Moore was upended 9-8 (6) by Sonja Molnar and Alexis Dorr at No. 1.
Marquette evened the score, 1-1, when Metzler earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Majercik at No. 6 singles. But, Iowa went ahead 2-1 when Molnar defeated Calderon, 6-3, 6-3 at the top singles spot. Lynne Poggensee-Wei downed sophomore Christina Ruiz, 7-6 (4), 6-1, at No. 3 to go ahead 3-1.
Olga Fischer's three-set win over Dorr, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, at No. 2 helped the Golden Eagles come within on point, 3-2, but the Hawkeyes clinched the team win with victories at No. 4 and No. 5.
The Golden Eagles return to action Friday, Feb. 13, against Toledo at 5 p.m. at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
