Marquette Fights to a 4-3 Victory at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa - The Marquette women’s tennis team (5-2) earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory at Iowa State (0-2) on Friday afternoon. “This was a great road win for the team,” head coach Jody Bronson said. “It was not our best day, but we fought hard to pull out our 4-3 victory. Kudos to Laia for her first clinch as a freshman.” The Golden Eagles swept doubles competition as junior Rocio Diaz teamed with sophomore Ali Dawson at the No. 1 spot once again and they won, 8-6. The duo of sophomore Ana Pimienta and freshman Erin Gebes played at No.2 doubles and won, 8-3, while freshmen Aleeza Kanner and Aina Hernandez-Soler defeated their Cyclones opponent, 8-6. In singles action, MU dropped the top three spots, but remained alive in the match as Gebes won at No. 4 singles, 6-3 and 6-1, and Kanner easily defeated Gasparovic (ISU), 6-0, 6-3. The match came down to the sixth slot as freshman Laia Hernandez Soler clinched the match for the Golden Eagles rallying in extra points to earn a 6-1, 7-6 (3) victory in the tiebreaker. MU will return home and host Western Michigan at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium on Monday, Feb. 11 at 4:30 p.m. Marquette 4, Iowa State 3 DOUBLES
