No. 66 Virginia Tech Sweeps Marquette, 7-0

COlUMBUS, Ohio - The Marquette women's tennis team was unable to come away with a victory Saturday afternoon at the Jesse Owens West Tennis Center and was shutout by No. 66 Virginia Tech, 7-0. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 1-7 on the spring dual season.
Despite coming close in all three doubles matches, the duos of sophomore Lauren Little and junior Shannon Brown, and juniors Maria Calbeto and Erin Watkins fell 8-4 to its Virginia Tech counterparts at no. 1 and no. 2 doubles, respectively. The no. 3 doubles pair of senior Francina Bonnelly and freshman Maggie Wilson was defeated, 8-5, leaving the Hokies to take the early 1-0 lead.
In singles play, Virginia Tech's Inga Beermann took down Little at the no. 1 spot, 6-3, 7-5. Ashley James claimed the no. 2 position with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Calbeto. Jessica Long defeated Watkins, 6-4, 6-2, for the win at No. 3.
J.J. Larson and sophomore Robin Metzler battled, with Larson coming out on top at no. 4 singles, 6-4, 7-6. Karina Porushkevich routed Elly Strother, 6-0, 6-1, in the no. 5 match. Abby Walker gave Tech the sweep with a tight match against Bonnelly at No. 6. Walker won 6-4, 6-7, 1-0.
Today's match marked the fifth nationally ranked team the Golden Eagles have played thus far in the spring season.
"I think we are giving these teams we are playing great competition, and we to are getting great competition from them as well," said head coach Jody Bronson. "The competition we are getting is enabling us to play at a higher level and when we turn the corner, hopefully we will take off."
The Golden Eagles return to action on Valentine's Day at Wisconsin at 4 p.m.
