Jan. 28, 2006
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - No. 44 Iowa swept the Marquette women's tennis team, 7-0, at the Clark Racquet Center at Coe College Friday. With the loss, the Golden lose their second straight, and fall to 0-2 on the season. In doubles action, Meg Racette and Merel Beelen defeated freshman Lauren Little and sophomore Erin Watkins in the first doubles match, 8-2. At no. 2 doubles Kayla Berry and Krissy Dowlin downed freshman Robin Metzler and junior Katie Donovan, 8-6. Marquette's line-up was thin due to illness and injury, resulting in Jacqueline Lee and Mili Veselinovic at the #3 position to win their doubles match by default. Heading into singles play, Iowa was ahead 3-0, after the Golden Eagles were unable to pull out victories in the first three singles matches. Lee clinched the match for Iowa with a 6-0, 6-1 win over junior Andrea Bukacek at no. 4 singles. Little gave 21st-ranked Racette a battle, but lost 6-0, 7-6 (5), 10-5 at no. 1 singles. Watkins and Metzler were also unsuccessful in their respective singles matches, and the Hawkeyes won by default at no. 5 and 6 positions to seal the 7-0 sweep. The Golden Eagles return to action when they host Illinois-Chicago in their home opener at Helfaer Tennis Stadium on February 1, at 4 p.m. #44 Iowa 7, Marquette 0 Singles
