No. 73 Marquette Defeats Toledo, 6-1

Feb. 13, 2009

MILWAUKEE - The No. 73 Marquette women's tennis team, ranked nationally for the first time since the 1999-00 season, stayed on their winning course with a 6-1 win over Toledo on Friday night in Milwaukee. The victory brings the Golden Eagles to a 7-3 overall record (1-0 BIG EAST).

The Golden Eagles began Friday night by capturing the doubles point to go ahead 1-0 for the night. The duos of Christina Ruiz-Robin Metzler and the Hush sisters each posted wins, 8-4 and 8-2, respectively.

Toledo's pair of Martina Wodzinski and Maha Guirguis captured a win over Paola Calderon and Kylie Moore, but was not enough to gain the doubles point for the Rockets.

Momentum from the doubles win carried into singles play, as sophomore Moore easily handled Toledo's Jessica Azoulay, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6.

Olga Fischer tallied her sixth consecutive singles win with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ashley Frey from the No. 2 singles position.

Marquette's lone senior, Metzler, stepped up for her team at the No. 5 slot, posting 6-1 and 6-2 scores against the Rockets' Jenny Belsky.

No. 4 sophomore Rachael Hush, last season's leader in singles wins, added to this season's record with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Nadia Zoubareva.

Toledo earned their lone point of the match with Maha Guirguis tallying a 7-5, 6-3 win over sophomore Ruiz at the No. 3 spot. Guirguis is 6-0 from the No. 3 singles spot this season.

All eyes were focused on the action on court one, as freshman Calderon battled with Toledo's Martina Wodzinski. Calderon dropped the first set, 5-7, but then rallied during two tiebreakers to capture the win at No. 1. The two traded points until the score was tied 6-6, when Calderon won the first tiebreaker to go ahead, 7-6. In their third set, Calderon was focused, jumping out to an early lead and eventually holding off a Rockets rally to win the third set 10-8.

The match drops the Rockets to 4-4 overall.

The No. 73 Golden Eagles will host Illinois State on Sunday, Feb. 15 at noon in the midst of a seven-match homestand.
